Part of the London Literature Festival in October includes a current fabulous children’s poetry pop-up called Alphabet Soup.

The pop-up comprises family workshops and activities to create poems and stories. Created by artist Anna Bruder and poet Arjunan Manuelpillai, the activities are designed for ages 5 to 11. The event is free entry and is situated in the Southbank Centre.

Incy had a jolly time building poems with a food theme. There were three areas of activity – Nibbles and Soup for starters, where children could pick up a plate and cutlery template and draw in poems, words or letters.

Second were the Small Plates where they could build mini poems on their own floor-sized, lined paper.

Finally, was the main where children were able to select from a huge variety of words and phrases to make their own recipe poems as a collective on giant floor paper. With phrases like “moonstone dust” and “fairy fingers”, the poems could be whimsical and delicious. Throw in a “centipede legs” though and they could make it turn in another direction completely!

Incy created a recipe poem “for a monster troll” and he was served “drippy hula-hoops” and “1000 noodle-doodle in mint chicken” before ending on machinery for crunch.
