Most readers will be familiar with There was an Old Woman who Swallowed a Fly; a rhyming text detailing the most bizarre tale; a woman swallows a series of creatues, beginning with a tiny fly all the way up to a horse. A spin-off of that classic tale comes There was an Old Auntie who Swallowed a Samosa; a very entertaining premise featuring Muslim characters. This book was written by the founder of the brilliant publishing company Ruqaya’s Bookshelf.
Auntie Sophia is preparing some food for an iftar taking place later that night at her local masjid (mosque). But when her back is turned her cheeky cat Serrano decides the dish needs more flavour. At the iftar, when Auntie Sophia tries to take a bite of the samosa, she is startled and swallows the samosa whole!

Serrano’s extra ingredient causes Auntie Sophia to have the most extreme reaction. Will the iftar be ruined? Will Auntie Sophia survive the terrible samosa?

With beautiful illiustrations and perfect rhyme, this is a hilarious book, ideal to share during Ramadan.
This is one of Incy’s most favourite of all the books from Ruqaya’s Bookshelf, and one she reaches for again and again. It is loved by all of the Appleseed family and very enjoyable to read together.
