Just released by Andersen Press comes a modern-day version of Godzilla for kids! Super Mega Tortoise is a kaiju-inspired, comic style picture book authored by Gareth Hopkins and illustrated by Beatrice Blue.
Kaiju films are a genre featuring giant monsters, like Godzilla, who attack cities and people. The term “kaiju” comes from Japanese, meaning “strange beast.”
Swallowing a head teacher, chasing some ducks, and gobbling a few busy humans is all in a day’s work for Super Mega Tortoise until he meets a new friend. When Sakura points out how uncool his actions are, Super Mega Tortoise turns over a new leaf. In fact, Super Mega Tortoise learns how to make up for his mistakes (humorously giving the busy humans coffee to drink and so on), and the lessons learned include cohesion and also the importance of putting things right.
Incy attended the book launch where author Gareth Hopkins read the book and encouraged children to draw their own Super Mega character. Tying in with Easter, Gareth drew Super Mega Bunny! The potential next sequel!

Incy drew Super Mega Bunny with lasers shooting out of his belly button!

Incy said she liked this book firstly because it had a tortoise in it, and she loves animals. She said it’s also because the tortoise is “so Super and so Mega!” She liked the end because Sakura and Super Mega Tortoise’s friendship is adorable.
At the book launch author Gareth Hopkins described how he grew up watching kaiju films and creating Super Mega Tortoise came naturally.

Together with illustrations that are bright and cartoony, with dynamic action scenes, this is a book children will be drawn to. Get your copy at the Incy Appleseed store:
